Caged Fury

USA, 1989
Director: Bill Milling
Starring: Erik Estrada, Richard Barathy, Roxanna Michaels

A Women in Prison flick from the late '80s starring Erik Estrada??!! Wow, that's gotta be cheesy right? But this exploitation-themed poster sure is a great advertisement for the film.

This poster improves upon the American version which has distracting pictures and text overlaid on the main image. The photography is centered more effectively here, our eyes following perspective from ass to ass until focus is inevitably led to the dominatrix-like warden silhouetted against prison bars in the background.

Awesome.

Enter the Void

France, 2010
Director: Gaspar Noe
Starring: Nathaniel Brown, Paz de la Huerta, Cyril Roy, Olly Alexander

Great film! Read my review here

Poster shows the Tokyo Love Hotel "Enter the Void" - a double-entendre describing both the sexual purpose of the building and the theme of the movie itself.

The hyper-stylised fluoro colours were part of director Gaspar Noe's attempt at replicating the visuals he experienced while under the influence of the drug DMT. An experience which he likened to the 49 days a soul spends inbetween death and reincarnation, according to the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

Production design and effects were supervised by Marc Caro (City of Lost Children, Delicatessen)

American Psycho

USA, 2000
Director: Mary Harron
Starring: Christian Bale, Chloe Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Samantha Mathis, Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe

There were quite a few posters for American Psycho issued worldwide, but this Japanese one is my favorite. It distills the essence of the movie perfectly, conveying a horror theme within the context of a pristine yuppie sensibility. The stark black and white mimimalism of Patrick Bateman's business card is used, but accented with a stylish blood-red streak as Christian Bale drags a full body bag out of frame.

Its not often that a horror poster uses white as its main color ... and rarely to such great effect.

I Am Curious: Yellow

Sweden, 1967
Director: Vilgot Sjoman
Starring: Lena Nyman, Vilgot Sjoman, Borje Ahlstedt

This poster is for the 2002 Japanese release of this late '60s Swedish sexploitation flick, a film that was banned in many countries upon release. The use of colour tints and sunglasses is certainly not unique, but results in a stylish and instantly recognizable psychedelic aesthetic, and is easily the best poster that I have seen for this film.

As is true of all the best movie poster art, the design effectively conveys the film's genre. Looking back 35 years to the golden age of hippiedom through rose tinted glasses is the route taken here, somewhat ironically given that the film itself is in black and white!

In any case, this is a great example of a psychedelic movie poster. The chirashi is printed on heavy matte stock.

Yakuza Busting Girls

Japan, 2010
Director: Shin'ichi Okuda
Starring: Asami, Naoki Kawano, Hitomi Miwa, Kenji Motomiya, Yumi Yoshiyuki, Porche Okite

I've been a fan of Rockin' Jellybean's art for a number of years now, even making the Erostika store in Harajuku a part of my 'must-go' itinerary when visiting Tokyo a couple of years back. The artist known seems to be responsible for most of their designs, and he has a pulp illustrative style that combines elements of cartoon art, 50's monster movies, and exploitation films. The result is a highly colourful and light-hearted mish mash of boobs, blades and exploitation tropes.

It was therefore an inspired collaboration for him to produce this poster art for a movie that shares similar themes. It has all the elements that any connoisseur of Japanese grindhouse could ask for ... the babes, the katana, blood and guns rolled together into a fantastic piece of artwork.

While most movie posters are created by dedicated design professionals specializing in movie poster art, its rarer to see artwork produced by a successful independent artist. Fans of this style should track this one down! It is available relatively inexpensively as a Chirashi (see link at bottom of post), or the larger version can be purchased directly on the Erostika website (partially English-friendly).

Note: The chirashi itself is a 4-pager, advertising two "Yakuza Busting Girls" movies - "Final Death Ride Battle", and "Duel in Hell".
